Our Special Thanks Go to the staff of Macalester College & Participating High Schools! More than 400 high school students from Twin Cities area packed Kagin Commons of Macalester College to participate in a model UN conference on 11-19-18 organized by United Nations Association (UNA) in Minnesota.
James Farnsworth, UN Association’s Model UN Coordinator, welcomed the attendees and convened the conference.
High school teacher and UNA in MN board member, Kari Rise, planned and supervised the well-received conference.
Kari greeted Tim Odegard, the Program Director of Global Minnesota who spoke about the significance of international education at the plenary session.
The students dressed and acted as real diplomats at the real UN and were brought by buses for a full day of leaning, excitement, adventure and college feeling.
Tom Hanson (center), Retired US Foreign Service Officer, President of Committee on Foreign Relations Minnesota and University of MN Diplomat-In-Residence eloquently presented the keynote address about the importance of international cooperation and the critical work of the UN-especially the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
After the opening session, the students were grouped into 3 committees to deal with the agenda of: United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF).
The best leaders won awards.
UNA MN president, M. Jay Shahidi thanks Holly St. Clair, a student at U of M, who assisted James Farnsworth to organize and conduct the conference. He also presented a short history of the UN and UNA to the audience.
